STAND & DELIVER
FOR EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS

MAKE YOUR POINT

Most people would agree that the key to effective communication is not so much what you say, but how you say it.  When we miss that mark, our message isn’t heard.

Making your interactions count to achieve cooperation, belief and support means involving and valuing your audience, whether it’s one-on-one or from the podium.  The more comfortable you are in your own skin, the easier it is to enhance the quality of your connections.  You’re free to focus on who they are instead of your own concerns.

CREATING CONNECTIONS – Lesson One
It’s simple. In every exchange, however brief (that “Hello” in the elevator. for example), decide to take the time to see the person.  Really.   The person who resides behind  the eyes. Every one of us can sense when that connection happens.  Wait for it … then speak.  They will experience you as interested in them. It’s almost automatic.  They will think,  “That person is so approachable.”  They may even think, “That person is a fabulous communicator!”  And that is the story they will tell about you.

THE POWER OF CURIOSITY
How many interactions do you have where you come away feeling seen and heard?  How do you enter conversations?  Most of us spend the bulk of our interactive time planning what to say next.  The biggest gift we can give another person is often to simply be curious – about who they  are and what they have to contribute.  The combination of taking time to connect and employing genuine curiosity is a potent communication skill.

THE POWER TO RESPOND
We’re deeply intuitive.  When we are able to get past our own concerns about what others are thinking about us to an awareness of how we affect others – intuition kicks in. We begin to respond with power and integrity.  We relate.  This feeling of authenticity is communicated and encourages cooperation, understanding and synergy.

THREE KEYS TO COMMUNICATION
The foundation that builds exceptional communication skills rests on three factors – self awareness, comfort in one’s own skin, and focusing attention on the experience of the others (and not worrying about you!)
